GEOGRAPHY

The vision

At Pakeman Primary School, we are proud to offer an engaging and comprehensive geography curriculum that sparks curiosity and a love for the world around us. Using the Oddizzi scheme, an engaging online resource that helps bring geography to life, our students explore key topics from the national curriculum, including physical and human geography, map skills, and an understanding of diverse cultures and environments. Through hands-on learning, exciting activities, and global connections, we aim to develop confident young geographers who are equipped to understand and navigate the world in which they live.

Curriculum Coverage

At Pakeman Primary School, our geography curriculum in Key Stages 1 and 2 provides a well-rounded exploration of the world. We focus on four key areas: locational knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical geography, and geographical skills and fieldwork. In Key Stage 1, children begin to develop an understanding of the world’s continents, countries, and oceans, while exploring the human and physical features of different places. As they progress into Key Stage 2, students build on this foundation by studying more complex geographical concepts, using maps and tools to develop their skills in fieldwork and analysis. Through a rich blend of classroom learning and practical activities, our geography curriculum helps students connect with the world, fostering curiosity and critical thinking.

Assessment

Pakeman Primary School takes a comprehensive approach to assessing geography, ensuring that students develop both knowledge and skills throughout their learning journey. The school uses a variety of assessment methods, including class discussions, written work, and project-based tasks, to monitor progress and understanding. A key tool in the geography curriculum is the Oddizzi scheme. This scheme provides interactive lessons, quizzes, and activities that allow students to explore global themes, build geographical skills, and demonstrate their understanding in a creative and practical way. Teachers at Pakeman use Oddizzi’s assessment resources including quizzes and written tasks alongside other assessment strategies to track each child’s development, ensuring a well-rounded and dynamic approach to geographical education.

How to Help at Home

Supporting your child’s geography learning at home is a great way to build their curiosity about the world! Each term, we provide Knowledge Organisers that outline key facts, vocabulary, and concepts for their geography topics. These are printed for children to use at home and are also available on Class Dojo for easy access.
Additionally, our ‘Take Home Menu’ homework includes engaging activities, with at least one task linked to geography during those half terms. These tasks encourage children to explore their learning in creative and practical ways—whether it’s researching different places, making maps, or investigating environmental issues.
By discussing these topics, exploring maps together, and encouraging questions about the world, you can help spark your child’s love for geography!
