Schools to Market, run in partnership with Whole Kids (a pillar of Whole Foods Market Foundation), is a food education programme that takes children and young people through every step of the food production journey. Pakeman children began this journey when they planted crops in our school garden. They then visited a farm to harvest fresh produce, picking blackberries, raspberries and rhubarb. Next, they learned how to turn their fresh ingredients into delicious jams and rhubarb cake. Finally, they packaged their creations and prepared for Market Day at Whole Foods in Stoke Newington, applying their marketing and sales skills and completing the journey from farm to consumer. We have been so impressed and proud of our children throughout this project. The five children chosen to represent Pakeman to sell in store to the public were particularly impressive with the confident and polite way that they dealt with customers. They talked to the public about their project and all the things that they’d done leading up to their products being for sale in store. A special mention goes to Elena and David – their particular sales skills definitely contributed to a whopping £114 total in sales. Whole food sale staff said they were doing better sales than them! Elena even got security to make a purchase. A huge thank you goes to Marcia who has been at the helm of this amazing and joyful project from start to finish.
